TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) based in UK is one of the largest and most comprehensive independent centres working in transport in the world. For more than 70 years it has developed research-based technical knowledge which enables clients to obtain a better understanding of transport problems, to improve value for money and to generate competitive advantage.
TRL works with Governments and international funding institutions to set standards for highway and vehicle design, formulate policies on road safety, improve transport and the environment, and encourage good traffic engineering practice. Its work for companies enables them to gain added value in providing and maintaining transport infrastructure and services, or to minimise the cost of transport on their operations.
On 17 Sept 2009, IBS and TRL entered into an MoU to develop technology solutions that can redefine the future of road transportation. The MoU covers partnership on a number of technology-focused R&D activities and training on matters involving road transport management and safety. This joint venture is significant since there is an increasing demand on Governments to implement solutions that will make surface transportation more efficient, sustainable and safe.
IBS and TRL will collaborate in developing Intelligent Transport Solutions and Information Management systems that will increase safety, efficiency and sustainability, through tool-based consulting approach. Research on various aspects of road safety, analyzing gaps in existing road transportation & safety solutions available globally, and trying to address those will be part of the areas of collaboration. The partnership may see development of new solutions for sustainable road transport including solutions for carbon footprint analysis and management. Another focus area would be country level accident data systems which can be implemented in a very short time frame. Initial focus will be on the Middle East, Europe and India regions.
