iCargo Mobility solution transforms Qantas' cargo operations

Qantas Freight embarked on an ambitious transformation program in early 2009, aiming to transform its work processes, streamline operations and improve customer service thereby differentiating itself from competition.

To have a project of this size and complexity completed on time, within budget and with no interruption to our operations is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our business experts and IBS.

Client overview

Qantas, Australia's national carrier and one of the world's leading airlines, deployed IBS' Cargo Management Solution across its international air freight division, Qantas Freight.

Qantas selected iCargo — the IBS cargo management solution — to replace its legacy cargo solution with the vision to increase business agility and efficiency of operations. The airline successfully migrated its global cargo sales, reservations and capacity management functions to IBS' iCargo platform, with iCargo replacing a legacy system at the end of May with a cutover involving cargo operations in thirteen countries.

The solution

The migration represents a significant achievement within Qantas' multi-million dollar Freight Futures business transformation initiative. The program aims to differentiate the carrier from competitors by delivering enhanced customer services. When terminal operations are integrated in a planned 2011 cutover, iCargo will oversee the airline's complete freight movements.

Subsequent to the successful rollout of the iCargo system, Qantas shifted gears to introducing innovative technology based business capabilities on top of the new generation IT platform. The case study documents Qantas' journey from legacy systems to a modern, integrated cargo management solution — including the iCargo Mobility solution — as part of their broader "Freight Futures" business transformation initiative.

The iCargo platform serves full freighter carriers, passenger-cargo combination carriers, ground handling agents, and customs authorities. Its modular architecture accommodates tailored implementations based on customer requirements. The fully web-based solution employs modern technology and complies with industry standards including Cargo 2000 and e-Freight. Twenty-one customers had adopted iCargo since its launch four years prior.

V K Mathews, Chairman & CEO of IBS Group: "Having partnered with us during the building of the solution, Qantas' choice of iCargo for Freight Futures is an endorsement of our joint vision to create the most definitive Cargo Management System for the air transport industry."
